Home - Issues and Solutions - Outdoor Solutions - How to protect the iron from oxidation
The not protected iron, when exposed to air for a long time, quickly oxidizes and gradually loses its integrity damaging the entire structure of the building. The oxidative process, even at its initial phases, stains the iron with spots and blemishes, starts sagging and blanching. Therefore, it is important to provide a proper protection of the support or restore it if the previous coats of protective substance start showing signs of deterioration.
New Iron
Remove all the detached rust and the calamine while brushing, sanding or sandblasting. Apply one or two coats of MINIO ANTI-RUST, one after 24 hours from the other. Gently sand the second coat with sandpaper and remove every sandblasting residue.
Already varnished iron
1. Remove the superficial rust and the old detached enamel while brushing.
2. Degrease with NUBISOLVE. If there are some particular areas with rust, apply the rust converter MANGIARUGGINE with a small brush after removing the detaching pieces.
3. After the surface has dried off, apply with a brush the ANTIRUGGINE MINIO diluted with PINOSOLVE on the exposed spots, which is a product made with anticorrosive pigments. After 24 hours, apply another coat on the whole surface and let it dry for the next 12-24 hours. Gently sand with some light sandpaper in order to cover all creases.
4. Remove the sanding residues. The performance of the anti-rust is about 8-10 m2/l for 50-60 micron. The anti-rust products can not be used as finishing varnishes and always need to be covered with paint.
On this base, apply the finishing enamel choosing between the following products:
S1: professional alkyd base with solvent, that has to be applied on two different coats, one after 24 hours from the other, with a performance 12-14 m2/l for each coat, which corresponds to 40-50 micron.
FERRONOTTE: finishing micaceous alkyd base with solvent, which contains anti-corrosive pigments and must be applied in two coats, one after 24 hours from the other, with a performance of 8-10 m2/l that correspond to about 60-70 micron. For a long lasting protection we suggest applying a second coat after 24 hours. When the applications is barely exposed, can be applied in two coats directly on the iron, thanks to its anti-corrosive power.
The products must be applied in a homogeneous way crossing the brush strokes during the drafting. A proper application allows to automatically obtain the indicated thickness for each single coat. It is important not to exceed with the thickness of the coats in order to avoid anomalies during the drying phase and avoiding wrinkling. Any higher thicknesses must be obtained with more subsequent applications; the following coats must be applied, in any case, when the previous hand has completely dried off. In some conditions and for some colors, the drying times can become longer but that does not affect the quality of the product. In the case of external applications, check that the surface is perfectly dry and, if necessary, wait or dry it.
